The Kitchen method.

There are so many tips to consider when planning a kitchen. The work triangle, an open floor plan, and zones are concepts to consider when planning your ideal kitchen.  The kitchen is the room it feels like I have focused most of my attention to in the plan so far.  In our old house we put in a Ikea kitchen and that is the plan here.

The cabinet finishes that we are considering are the ABSTRAKT grey gloss on the lower cabinets and then the RUBRIK APPLÅD Door in light turquoise for the upper cabinets.

We are found tile for the back splash and found some tile at Stover’s on Asheville Hwy

The tile picks up the colors from the RUBRIK APPLÅD door color.  I am feeling it may be too busy or maybe the type of glass tile makes it feel a little random.  I like a pattern and I think I would be staring at that tile all the time trying to find a pattern in it.  Our initial reaction was that this tile would pull the blue colored doors and the grey colored doors together.  The Grey isn’t really matching in my opinion.

I have to be honest I am resistant to the Grey.  The reason why I picked the cork floor color  was so we could have a contrast with the cabinets.  I had in mind these these dark cabinets.  Look at this example from IKEA’s web site.  They use the dark cabinets with the blue.  It is warm and inviting.

You can see here in this picture the new line of IKEA cabinets called METOD (pronounced: meh-tooood) that are rumored to be replacing the FAKTUM line.  The Release date for these cabinets in the US alludes me and will likely and unfortunately be later that this summer or the fall when our house will be done.

See the back splash in that photo above.  They are actually using door panels as the backsplash.

On our second saturday trip to the tile stores we found the solution to our kitchen indecision.  It boils down to finding these tile for the backsplash.

The Kitchen Island includes the sink.  This will be great place to stand and do the dishes while looking out over the view of the back yard.  The plan shows a raised raised bar and that is not going to be the case.  I want a counter height bar with the cascading countertops to the floor like in this photo.

We have chosen the Cambria White HAll

With that we won’t have a surface to mount a switch for the disposal so they make these buttons that can sink into the countertop next to the sink.  With a press of a button it turns on the disposal.

The area down next to the door to the patio there is room for a desk and mail cubbies that Scott is excited about. I am considering putting magnetic chalkboard paint on the backsplash there.  That way I can put the weekly menu there and post reminders and such above my desk.

Opposite the Desk area will be a mop and broom cabinet that I will want to place outlet in there to charge my dyson hand held vacuum and swifter sweeper mop.  Next to that is the pullout pantry.

I love to bake.  That is one of my favorite things to do is take a day off of work and bake pie and cookies.   Next to the pantry is an area or my kitchen aid mixer and have the dry goods in the cabinet below.  The wall above will have the tile backsplash up to the top of the cabinets beside it.  Maybe I’ll place a shelf there to for my cake plates etc.
